Protein-based drugs are widely used in medical applications. Six out of ten of the current best-selling drugs are biological products. Simon Gustafsson et al. from Uppsala University made nanocellulose membranes from Cladophora cellulose. The recovery and separation of bovine serum albumin (BSA), γ-globulin, and lysozyme by the membranes were measured. It shows that nanocellulose-based filtration materials have ideal stability for the separation and purification of proteins.
